What this word counter does
This page counts words, characters, sentences, paragraphs, and lines for any text you paste in, and estimates reading and speaking time. It also checks your text against common platform limits so you can tell at a glance whether a post or meta description fits.
If you searched for terms like word count, character counter, reading time calculator, or twitter character count, this page is built to give you a fast answer with a clean, single-screen interface.
How counts are computed
Words are counted by trimming the text and splitting on whitespace. Sentences are split on terminal punctuation such as period, question mark, and exclamation mark. Paragraphs are split on blank lines, and lines follow the line breaks in your input.
Reading and speaking time
Reading time is estimated using an average of 200 words per minute, which is typical for silent reading of general prose. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, closer to a natural conversational pace, which is useful when drafting talks, voiceovers, or videos.
Platform limit reference
Different platforms enforce different character limits. The tool shows how close your text is to each limit and highlights when you go over.
| Platform | Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Twitter / X post | 280 characters | Single post limit for free accounts |
| SMS message | 160 characters | Single GSM-7 segment, longer messages split into parts |
| Meta description | ~160 characters | Recommended length for search snippets |
| Title tag | ~60 characters | Recommended length for search result titles |
When word count matters
- Writing essays or articles with a target word count
- Trimming a social media post to fit a character limit
- Drafting SEO titles and meta descriptions
- Estimating how long a script or voiceover will take
- Spot checking repeated words and filler phrases
Tips for clearer writing
Word count is a starting point, not a goal. The top words list can hint at filler phrases, and a long sentence count with few paragraphs often signals dense text that needs breaks. Use the counters to set targets, then read the text out loud to make sure the rhythm matches the count.
